Computational Chemistry Studentships High School Scholarships

High School Scholarships Available PhD position within the research group of Dr. Martijn Zwijnenburg, located in the Department of Chemistry UCL. Our research aims to understand an important phenomenon in the photophysics and photochemistry of inorganic nanostructures. Using the concepts of quantum and statistical mechanics, we apply and develop methods for computer simulation of excitation process of relevance for photocatalysis and solar cells - such as the localization of electrons and holes in nanostructures and their transfer to organic molecules adsorbed on the surface. Interesting material for our oxide (magnesium oxide, zinc oxide, titanium dioxide), sulfide (zinc sulfide, cadmium sulfide) and solids are more complex (tantalum oxynitride). PhD High School Scholarships projects are advertised will involve implementation and development of time-dependent density functional theory method which should allow to study the realistic use in such photocatalyst photocatalytic splitting of water into hydrogen and oxygen. http://www.callforpapersinfo.com
http://thescholarshipprogramme.com
Special work will focus on developing methods to describe the local catalytic center located on site vacancy / dopant in larger nanostructures and for cases in which an electrostatic potential applied to nanostructures in combination with lighting (photoelectrochemistry). The
High School Scholarships methods developed will be used for titanium dioxide and tantalum oxynitride photocatalyst for renewable hydrogen production and the results will be compared with that obtained by our experimental collaborators at UCL and abroad.
